Finishing the Bathroom
In Your Small House
When you reach the phase of finishing the bathroom for your small house there are many bathroom fixtures to consider. You will need to choose a bathtub and sink, cabinets, sink and bathtub faucets, showerhead, toilet, towel racks, and other accessories.
There are so many differences in design, construction, and price it is sometimes difficult to know where to begin and what to choose. A good place to begin is to determine what decor you would like to feature in your bathroom such as modern or traditional, and then begin to look for fixtures that will complement your choice. Consider price as well as quality since you will want the fixtures to be durable and last for a long time.
Another point to consider is what you will want to do with the bathroom in the future with regard to remodeling. If you plan to change the décor, it may be a good idea to consider bathroom fixtures that will be versatile enough to compliment the new décor. For instance, if you choose a neutral color bathtub or sink this will most likely work with a makeover that includes color change without having to rip out all of the fixtures and start again from scratch.
When choosing the bathroom fixtures, you should consider fixtures that run efficiently and will save you money down the line on water bills. Such fixtures include low flow toilets and showerheads. There are many low flow models in both categories that offer high performance in terms of flushing power and shower head spray strength. Low flow doesn't necessarily mean a paltry trickle anymore.
Toilets and showerheads are rather cost effective to install and are now built to be water efficient without sacrificing water pressure. Pressure flush and low flow toilets are rapidly becoming the norm and are replacing the older toilets which require up to five gallons per flush. When you are considering conservation, pressure balanced valves are also a good idea because they will keep the water temperature flow constant and prevent it from fluctuating.
It is usually a good idea to go with name brand fixtures due mainly to the fact that the parts are easy to replace and it is also easier to get service in the event that you need it. Prices will vary according to color and whether or not it is a designer fixture. Of course the designer fixtures are going to cost much more than the standard fixtures however, name brand standard fixtures offer quality and function that is just as good.
Although the design of plumbing fixtures put a refreshing finishing touch on your bathroom, you will need to choose the plumbing fixtures early on in the project. This is because the plumbing fixtures will need to fit the plumbing that is installed behind the wall very early on during construction. The same rule applies to choosing a sink, toilet, and bathtub early on so that the in-wall plumbing will be suitable for the fixtures that you choose.
Another feature often used in bathrooms, including small ones is radiant or underfloor heating. It adds a nice perk to any bathroom and it can work with just about any flooring type. It is also nice to step out of the bathtub onto a nice warm floor especially during cold winter months.
